Organizing the Time for the Portrait.
One of the most important things you can do to ensure a successful portrait session is to pick a time when your kids are well-rested and nourished, and the light is nice outside. Pictures look best when the light is soft and pleasant in the early morning or late afternoon. The morning is usually preferable for infants and toddlers. Outdoor shoots typically require a few days of planning, and if the weather forecast isn’t promising, I’ll do my best to reschedule for a day within two weeks. Delaying plans when someone is sick is preferable unless it’s an essential family gathering.
Style Guide
While I prefer not to impose too many strict rules on how to dress for a picture sitting, the following suggestions may be helpful. Wearing solid colors is recommended, as is making sure everyone coordinates without being too matchy-matchy; no one wants to look like they stepped out of a fashion magazine.
Narrowly striped shirts and herringbone patterns, in particular, can lead to amusing optical phenomena at specific print sizes. Therefore, it’s best to avoid wearing them. Be wary of logos since they become obsolete so rapidly. Ensure your kids feel well in their new clothes by trying them on and ensuring their shoes won’t rub. This is especially crucial when working with young children since they won’t be able to sit through a shoot without showing their displeasure.
Keep an extra set of clothing available in an emergency, and always dress appropriately for the season. Summer clothes will make you hot, and winter clothes will make you cold. Bring extra layers of clothing if you need to set up or change scenes in colder weather. Exposed regions are typically chillier than they appear, and waiting for the light to change or making a transition might expose you to dangerously low temperatures.
Remember that if your clothing appears wrinkled in the mirror, it will appear much more wrinkled in a photograph, so straighten your clothes thoroughly and make sure they fit nicely on your frame.
Makeup and Hairstyling
It’s best to obtain any beauty treatments that make you seem blotchy or get a new haircut at least a week before the shoot date. Remember that photographs tend to amplify color and contrast, so using heavy makeup will look unnatural. Don’t freak out if you wake up the morning of the session with a pimple; minor imperfections may be edited out in Photoshop. When taking portraits, I always go for a candid feel. It’s preferable to err on conservatism when styling family pictures, as they may be on display for decades.
Food and Drinks
Having a stock of drinks and snacks helps entertain and bribe more minor children. However, only bring something that could make a manageable mess and end the session early.
Enjoy Yourself!
If young children are involved, be careful to emphasize the excitement and specialness of the occasion. Children are perceptive and will associate a photo shoot with negative connotations, such as a trip to the dentist, if you deliver stern warnings about lousy behavior or offer them bribes for being good beforehand. Explain that there is no need for them to sit still and that they can feel free to run around and play during the shoot.
I usually don’t put kids in a rush when taking their photographs, so they have plenty of time to get comfortable in front of the camera. After taking hundreds of photos, I’ve learned not to worry if the first one doesn’t turn out perfectly; sometimes, it takes a while for everyone to feel comfortable in front of the camera. Young people should not be forced to perform, which might lower their self-esteem and make them feel awkward. It’s better to wait it out. The best photos will become available in due time.
