Are You Taking Work Breaks Properly?

Have you ever had an annoying work stumble before? It was those moments when you did not have it together and could not function, although you already have had your morning coffee. Nothing seemed to kick-start your brain. You did not want to overthink, but you still thought, what was wrong? Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Why were you distraught? Why were the creative juices being so stubborn?

It got to the point that you procrastinated, waiting for the muse to come, but ended up extending your deadline. Tomorrow came, but you were still feeling awful, so what would you do?

Take a break and take a nap

“But if I do that, I’ll end up finishing nothing instead.” Well, that is one way to look at it. However, did you know that you are straining your brain cells more when forcing yourself to function? Especially, if your work deals with numbers and figures, being in a muddy state of mind will result in clerical errors. Your brain is not focused on doing the computations and records.

In other words, you are not actively working and remembering the data you are inputting. You are simply in a hovering state where your brain knows what it is doing because of motor and muscle memory, but you are not completely aware. Chances are you wouldn’t remember what you submitted, and you’d get a scolding.

Thankfully, taking a break and napping would reduce the likelihood that you would be draining your brain to point of no return. If you are not a fan of work naps, you would be surprised by the benefits of crashing to your couch and taking a 20-min nap.

Napping helps control your stress

Have you ever wondered why you always feel sleepy after crying or after eating? It is because sleep and hormone production go side by side. After eating your favorite meal and getting full, you feel fulfilled, relaxed, and later on sleepy. The same thing goes with stress; sleep controls cortisol production. Cortisol is the stress hormone. It peaks whenever you are triggered by external factors, and becomes unstable whenever the brain does not have enough rest aka sleep.

Whenever you are stressed, napping is the best way to feel better. Sleep regulates your cortisol and allows your brain to reset. You will wake up with a fresher take on the problem, and you will be able to finish work.

Taking a break helps you control your impulses

Have you ever had a bad day at work, and you just snapped? Well, people often snap when they are overwhelmed. Remember 2007 Britney Spears breaking a car window with an umbrella? That is one example of someone snapping. So, when working, you may experience instances when you just want to snap.

There might be scenarios when a client is too stubborn to understand that his request is impossible. There can even be annoying teammates who keep on distracting you and even unreasonable managers. How do you handle it? No one can blame you if one day, you will forget that you are in a workplace and remind these people of some logic and reasoning.

However, people tend to regret the things they have said and actions that they have done in anger. Whenever you hit a roadblock at work, always remember that a twenty-minute nap break is better than stretching your whole afternoon without actually doing and achieving anything. People take breaks differently. Some likes to drink coffee, others tend to stand outside their balcony, and some take a social media break. It is not to say that the following are bad examples of taking a break, but taking a break to relax and a nap should be your go-to. When you take a break properly, you are not entertaining any thoughts, and technically allowing your brain the rest it desperately needs to finally function.
